April 13, 2012

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--It's all NEWMAC play from here on out for the Smith College (4-16, 1-5 NEWMAC) softball team, beginning with a road doubleheader at league-leading Springfield College (15-10, 6-2 NEWMAC).

Last Smith Win: Megan Keifer was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to lift Smith to a come-from-behind, 6-5 win over Springfield in the NEWMAC tournament on April 23, 2008.  Smith was down 5-0 after three innings, but scored six times in the next three innings to deal the eventual tournament champions their only loss of the tournament.

Smith Overview: The Pioneers stumbled against Westfield State, managing one hit in an 8-0 defeat on Monday afternoon. Smith was held to their lowest hit total of the season.

Springfield Overview: The Pride had a seven game winning streak snapped with a pair of close losses to Williams in a doubleheader on Wednesday.  Springfield fell 1-0 and 4-2, ending a streak that saw the Pride score at least seven runs in every game and won five games via run rule.

Smith Player to Watch: Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) has raised her average over 100 points in the last four games, going from .194 to .302.  She's currently carrying a five game hitting streak and hitting 8-for-12 over that span.

Springfield Player to Watch: Reigning NEWMAC Player of the Week Kasey Kelly is hitting .405 with three home runs and 15 RBI, and has made only two errors at second base.

Smith has had four players start every game at their respective positions - Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon), catcher, Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark), first base, Kirstie Beaton (Osterville, Mass./Barnstable), third base, and Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy), shortstop.
