Smith Swept By Springfield In NEWMAC Doubleheader

April 13, 2012

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark) was 3-for-4 with an RBI on the day, but it was not enough to keep the Smith College softball team from being swept in a NEWMAC doubleheader by Springfield College by scores of 12-2 and 8-0.  Both games ended in five innings.

Smith is now 4-18 overall, and 1-7 in NEWMAC play, while Springfield is 17-10, and 8-2 against NEWMAC competition.

Game One

Tess Gagliano put Springfield on the board with a 2-RBI single in the second, and Christina Leader doubled home to runs in the second inning.  Chelsea Bender and Gagliano made it 6-0 in the third with a single and a sacrifice fly, respectively.

Smith pulled two runs back in the fourth.  Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) hit a leadoff double and scored on Catherine Tocci (Belmont, Mass./Belmont)'s single to centerfield.  After Kirstie Beaton (Osterville, Mass./Barnstable) was hit by a pitch, Purington smacked a single to right, plating Tocci to make the score 6-2.  Smith loaded the bases on Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy)'s single, but a fielder's choice and line out to third ended the scoring threat.

The Pride added five more runs in the bottom half of the inning, including two more RBI from Gagliano, who finished 2-for-2 with five driven in.  Helen Buse (Nicasio, Calif./St. Ignatius) had two hits for Smith.  Kayla Kiers (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick) and Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais) each pitched two innings.

Game Two

Springfield limited Smith to five hits in game two, while scoring twice in the second and five times in the fourth.  Kelly Blake was 4-for-4 with 3 RBI.  Smith was not helped by three errors that gave the Pride three unearned runs.  Purington went 2-for-2, while Clark, Tocci, and Kate O'Brien (Santa Cruz, Calif./Santa Cruz) each had a hit.

Kiers pitched four innings, striking out one, while Clark notched 0.1 innings in the circle.

Smith will be back in action on Saturday, hosting WPI in a noon doubleheader.  Springfield will play at Babson, also on Saturday at noon.
