April 14, 2012

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The penultimate home doubleheader of the season gets underway for the Smith College softball team (4-18, 1-7 NEWMAC) when they host WPI (20-12, 7-5 NEWMAC) on Saturday at noon.

Last Meeting: Smith ended the 2011 season with a sweep at the hands of WPI by scores of 12-1 and 13-1 on April 16, 2011.

Last Smith Win: Emily Hitzlk pitched a complete game with six strikeouts and no walks, and turned in a 3-for-3 performance at the plate in a 5-3 win over WPI on March 28, 2009.  The win earned Smith a split of a doubleheader.

Smith Overview: Smith fell in a doubleheader to league leading Springfield College, 12-2 and 8-0 on Friday afternoon.  Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark) had three hits and an RBI in the two games.

WPI Overview: The Engineers earned a split of a doubleheader with Wheaton College on Friday, falling 3-0 in game one before winning 5-2 in the nightcap.  WPI has won three of four and four of six.

Smith Player to Watch: Purington has started every game at first base this season for Smith, with hits in six of her last eight games.

WPI Players to Watch:  The Engineers boast a pair of big bashers in Nicole McDonough and Lauren DiFelice, who have hit six and seven home runs, respectively.

Did you know? The next time Smith travels to WPI, the Pioneers will play on a new field - that's on top of a parking garage.  WPI plans on breaking ground in May on a $20 million, 534 car parking garage with rooftop athletic fields for softball, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, rugby, and other recreational activities.
