Softball Swept By WPI, 12-4 and 5-3

April 14, 2012

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) had a fantastic day, batting 5-for-8 with two doubles, two runs, and an RBI as the Smith College softball team fell in a doubleheader to Worcester Polytechnic Institute 12-4 and 5-3 on Saturday afternoon.  Smith falls to 4-20 overall, and 1-9 in NEWMAC play, while WPI improves to 22-12, and 9-5 in the NEWMAC.

Game One

Katie Bumila hit two home runs to lead the Engineers to a 12-4 win in the opener.  Smith scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first.  Goodman rapped a single up the middle, stole second, and took third on Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais)'s groundout to third base.  Catherine Tocci (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) blooped a single to shallow center to bring home Goodman.

The Engineers drew level in the top of the second when Lauren DiFelice singled and scored on Amanda Pierce's double to left.  Smith took the lead back when Helen Buse (Nicasio, Calif./St. Ignatius) hit a two-out double in the second, and scored on Goodman's double.

In the top of the third, WPI took the lead for good.  Nichole McDonough singled home Juliana Fekete to tie the score, then scored on DiFelice's fielder's choice.  Ali LaRue singled to left to bring in Erin Beaulieu for a 4-2 WPI lead.

Bumila's first homer of the game, to left, upped the lead to 5-2, and Bealieau doubled home McDonough.  Smith pulled one run back in the bottom of the fourth.  Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) led off with a double and scored on Kate O'Brien (Santa Cruz, Calif./Santa Cruz)'s groundout.

WPI added three more in the sixth on Allie Roche's solo homer to left and Bumila's second longball of the day, a two-run shot to left.

Smith got within 9-4 when Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark) scored on an error, but WPI finished the scoring with three runs in the seventh.

McDonough finished with three hits and three RBI for the Engineers, who received a complete game, seven hit performance from Christa Coscia.  Goodman finished 3-for-4 for Smith.  Kayla Kiers (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick) struck out two in six innings of work for Smith.  Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais) pitched the final frame.

Game Two

The second game started out much the way the first did, as Smith opened the scoring the first inning with a leadoff double by Goodman, who scored on Catherine Tocci (Belmont, Mass./Belmont)'s groundout.  Smith held the lead until the third, getting out of a bases loaded jam in the second.  Three walks loaded the bases with one out, but Kiers got Chiana Montesi to strike out, and Roche flew out to center to end the threat.

Julianna Fekete led off the third with a walk, and singles by Bumila and Beaulieu loaded the bases for DiFelice, whose sacrifice fly scored Fekete to tie the score.  The score remained 1-1 until the fifth inning, when Fekete reached on a double and scored on McDonough's sacrifice fly.

Another sacrifice fly from Bumila and a double from Roche increased WPI's lead to 4-1, and a solo shot from DiFelice made it 5-1.

Smith put together a comeback attempt in the bottom of the seventh.  Purington started the rally with a singleup the middle, and Richardson walked.  After Kate Durkin (Victor, N.Y./Allendale Columbia) struck out, but both runners moved up on a wild pitch.  O'Brien roped a double to left field that scored both runners, cutting the score to 5-3.

Pinch runner Kat Katides (Quincy, Mass./The Newman School) took third on an error, but Goodman grounded out to third to end the game.

Goodman and Purington each had two hits for Smith, while Bumila registered a multiple hit game for WPI.

Kiers struck out four, going the distance for Smith, while Erin Flaherty also threw a complete game, with two strikeouts.

Smith will return to the diamond for a league doubleheader at MIT on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.  WPI will host Nichols in a non-conference doubleheader on April 18 at 3 p.m.
