NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The long season is edging to a close for the Smith College softball team (4-20, 1-9 NEWMAC), when they travel to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (7-18, 3-7 NEWMAC) on Tuesday afternoon.
Last Meeting: The Engineers won a doubleheader 9-1 and 3-1 over Smith, on March 26, 2011.
Last Smith Win: Smith posted a 10-4 win over MIT on April 14, 2009. Megan Kiefer was 4-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs, as Smith earned a split with the Engineers. That was the last league game Smith won until a 15-7 win over Babson earlier this season.
Smith Overview: The Pioneers dropped a tough doubleheader to WPI over the weekend, with a late comeback falling short in game two. Down 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning,
Kate O'Brien (Santa Cruz, Calif./Santa Cruz) brought home two runs with a one-double to left field. Smith had the tying run at the plate twice, but could not complete the rally.
MIT Overview: The Engineers fell to Coast Guard over the weekend in a doubleheader, by scores of 7-4 and 12-1. MIT has won three of six, however, including a sweep of Wentworth on April 11 and a split with Clark on April 13.
Smith Player to Watch: Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) has been torrid recently, with a 5-for-8 performance with a double and two RBI in both games against WPI.
MIT Player to Watch: Junior Leah Alpert is batting .343 with a team high four doubles and seven RBI.
