Smith Drops Two To Amherst

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College softball team combined for 13 hits in a doubleheader loss to Amherst College 12-4 and 18-2 on Monday afternoon. 


Game One:

The Lord Jeffs (19-0) took a first inning lead on Donna Leet's RBI single that brought home Kaitlin Silkowitz, but Smith tied the score when Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais) reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Kirstie Beaton (Osterville, Mass./Barnstable)'s two out single that tied the score. 

Leet put Amherst back in from with a two-run homer in the third, and the Lord Jeffs tacked on five more in the fourth courtesy of three Smith errors.

Smith would pull back three runs in the bottom of the fourth.  Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark) reached on an error and stole second.  A wild pitch moved her to third, and after Edie Richarson walked, Kate Durkin (Victor, N.Y./Allendale Columbia) singled to left-center to score Purington.  Helen Buse (Nicasio, Calif./St. Ignatius) followed with an RBI-double to left that brought home Durkin, and Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) slapped a single to right field that made it 8-4. 

Amherst scored again the the fifth on Alyssa Sherwill's RBI single, and made it 12-4 in the seventh thanks to another Smith error and Reilly Horan's RBI groundout.

Kayla Kiers (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick) went five innings and struck out four for Smith, and was relieved by Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais), who pitched the final two.


Game Two:

The Lord Jeffs again jumped out to an early lead, as Horan drove in two with a double, then scored on an illegal pitch.   Idalia Friedson then hit an RBI triple and Carly Dudzik added a sacrifice fly for a 5-0 lead.

Beaton drove in her second run of the day with a single up the middle that brought home Goodman in the bottom half of the inning, and Smith pulled within 5-2 in the second when Kate Durkin (Victor, N.Y./Allendale Columbia) walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Amherst responded with 10 runs in the top of the third where they sent 17 batters to the plate, and added three more in the fifth for the final margin.

Kiers and Clark combined to pitch the five innings for Smith, with Clark notching one strikeout.


Smith will next be in action on Wednesday, April 4, when they travel to Bay Path College.
