Game Preview: Softball vs. Babson

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--After a resounding win, the Smith College softball team (3-14, 0-4 NEWMAC) resumes league play when they host Babson College (14-12, 5-3 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon.

Last Meeting: The Beavers swept a doubleheader from Smith, 10-2, and 15-0 on April 9, 2011.  Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) hit her second home run of the year in the opener.

Last Smith Win:  Smith earned a doubleheader split with an extra inning, 3-2 win over Babson on April 7, 2007.  Chloe Pete started the inning on second due to the tiebreaker rule, and scored on single from Nicole Banton.

Smith Overview:  Smith ended a seven game losing skid with a 12-2 win over Bay Path on April 4.  Catherine Tocci (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) reached base four times, going 3-for-3 with a walk and two RBI.  Kayla Kiers (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick) picked up the win, striking out five in five innings of work in the circle.

Babson Overview: The Beavers collected a sweep of local rival Wellesley College last night, winning 7-6 and 8-0 to give head coach Dave Canan his 300th career victory on Friday night.  Tess Rubega tossed six scoreless innings to pick up the win.

Smith Player to Watch: Kate O'Brien (Santa Cruz, Calif./Santa Cruz) had two hits and an RBI against Bay Path, her third multiple hit game of the year.

Babson Player to Watch: Catie Funk is one of four Babson players with at least 20 RBI, and has a team leading four home runs.

Did you know? In 2005, Smith won the regular season NEWMAC championship, but Babson won the NEWMAC tournament title.
