Smith Captures First NEWMAC Win Since 2009

April 07, 2012

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) drove in five runs, and Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) was 3-for-3 with a double, as the Smith College softball team snapped a 41 game league losing streak dating back to 2009 with a 15-7 win over Babson College in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.  The Beavers took game one 11-3 in six innings.

Smith improves to 4-15, and 1-5 in the NEWMAC, while Babson is now 16-14, and 6-4 in league play.  Smith, which now has more wins this season than in the past two years combined, last won a league game with a 10-4 win over MIT on April 14, 2009.

Game Two

The Pioneers did it in comeback style, scoring 14 of their runs in the final three innings.  The Beavers had taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning courtesy of Catie Funk's RBI double, and added three more in the second when Jackie Enos drove home Nicole Ravetier with a single to right, and an error allowed Lindsey Schmid to score.  Babson made it 4-0 when Jess Pashos singled home Enos.

Smith did pull one back in the third.  With two out, Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais) walked and took second on Catherine Tocci (Belmont, Mass./Belmont)'s single.  Kirstie Beaton (Osterville, Mass./Barnstable) smacked a single to center to get Smith on the board.

The Pioneers took their first lead in the fourth inning.  Smith loaded the bases with Richardson's leadoff hit, Kate Durkin (Victor, N.Y./Allendale Columbia)'s walk, and Kat Katides (Quincy, Mass./The Newman School) was hit by a pitch.  After Tess Rubega replaced Meghan Hayes in the circle for Babson, Buse singled to right to score Richardson, and Goodman crushed her second home run of the year to left-center for a grand slam and a 6-4 Smith lead.

Babson did tie the game in the top of the fifth on a 2-RBI double from Sam Pilkington, but Smith responded in the bottom half with five runs to take the lead for good.  Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark) opened with a single to left, and Richardson moved her up with a single up the middle.  Durkin cracked a double that plated Purington for a 7-6 lead, and the floodgates opened.  Richardson scored on an error, Goodman hit an RBI single that brought home Durkin, and Kate O'Brien (Santa Cruz, Calif./Santa Cruz) scored on a Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais) single to right.  Helen Buse (Nicasio, Calif./St. Ignatius) scored when Catherine Tocci (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) grounded into a double-play to make it 11-6.

Babson pulled one more back on Ashleigh Phelps RBI double to left, but Smith ended the game with four runs in the sixth inning.  A dropped fly ball allowed Purington to go all the way to third, and she scored on Richardson's double.  Another Babson error scored Richardson, and another RBI single from Clark made it 14-7.  Goodman then scored on a passed ball to end the game and Smith's losing streak.

Clark and Tocci each had two hits for Smith, who scored the most runs in a game for seven years.  Kayla Kiers (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick) earned the win with three strikouts in four innings of relief work.  Clark started the game and tossed two innings, striking out two.

Game One

In the opener, Smith was limited to five hits in an 11-3 loss.  Funk doubled home Pashos to give Babson a quick 1-0 lead in the first, but Smith responded in the bottom half.  Clark drew a one-out walk, and after Tocci struck out, Beaton clubbed her first career home run to left-center for a 2-1 lead.

Babson regained the lead win the top of the next inning, as Pashos drove in two runs with a single, and Funk made it 4-2 with an RBI double.  An RBI single from Pilkington in the third made it 5-2, and though Smith pulled one back in the fourth on Kate Durkin (Victor, N.Y./Allendale Columbia)'s RBI groundout, Babson added two more runs in the fifth inning and four in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Beaton and Richardson each finished with two hits for Smith.  Kiers struck out two in a complete game efffort.  Babson was led by a 4-for-5 game from Funk, while five other Beavers each had at least two hits.

Smith will play their final non-conference game of the year when they travel to Westfield State on Monday, April 9, at 4:30 p.m.  Babson will host Endicott on April 12 for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
