NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College softball team (4-15) will look to string together consecutive wins for the first time this season when they take on Westfield State University (8-12) on Monday afternoon.
Last Meeting: Westfield State
edged Smith 4-2 on April 11, 2011.
Kayla Kiers (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick) spun a one-hitter, but the Owls took advantage of eight walks and three Smith errors to score three unearned runs.
Last Smith Win: The Pioneers grabbed a 6-4 win over Westfield State on April 9, 2007. Smith led from start to finish, and the Owls only made it close with four late runs.
Smith Overview: If you needed any further proof the Smith softball team is on the way back, the 15-7 win over Babson College could be entered into evidence. The Pioneers scored the most runs in a game for seven years, snapping a 41 game league losing skid in the process. Smith now has more wins this season than in the 2011 and 2010 seasons put together.
Westfield State Overview: The Owls are 4-8 since returning from their trip to Florida, most recently with a doubleheader split against MASCAC foe Bridgewater State. Westfield State is at .500 in league play thus far in 2012.
Smith Player to Watch: Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) is coming off a fantastic week, batting .500 in five games and driving in eight runs.
Westfield State Player to Watch: Kerin DeGirolamo is the only player to start all 20 games for Westfield, and is hitting .262 in 65 at-bats.
Did you know? No one on Westfield State has more than five RBI this season.
