Softball One-Hit By Westfield State

April 09, 2012

Box Score WESTFIELD, Mass. – Senior Madeline Tomich and a 13-hit onslaught powered Westfield State University to an 8-0, five-inning victory over Smith College in a non-conference softball game on Monday, April 9.  The Pioneers were limited to one hit in the loss, falling to 4-16 overall.  Westfield State improves to 9-12.

Tomich struck out the side in the top of the first inning and followed with seven more strikeouts over the next four frames. She was perfect through the first three innings then hit the leadoff batter to open the fourth.

Smith's Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) broke up the no-hit bid with one out in the top of the fifth when she connected on a high offering and belted it deep to left-center for a double.

Westfield (9-12) scored all the runs it needed in the first inning. Courtney Begin led off with a single up the middle for one of her three hits. Begin was safe at second (the game's only error) on Kerin DeGirolamo's fielder's choice. Bri Eichstaedt walked to load the bases and freshman second baseman Breanne Bisceglia rapped a two-out, two-run single to rightfield.

Westfield scored another run in the fourth inning when Bisceglia led off with a single up the middle and junior catcher Brittany Dussault lined an RBI double off the base of the fence in left-center.

The Owls put a quick end the game with a five-run, six-hit uprising in the fifth. Eichstaedt and Kelsey Carpenter singled then both advanced on a wild pitch. Bisceglia delivered an RBI groundout to make it 4-0. Freshman third baseman Vicki Hill followed with an RBI single up the middle and Dussault laced a single in the same location.

After a pitching change, Begin also singled up the middle to drive in a run and she advanced to second on the throw home. With runners and second and third, Lisa Policelli ended the game with a two-run double down the leftfield line.

Begin was 3 for 4 with an RBI and Dussault was 3 for 3 with an RBI and a double. Bisceglia was 2 for 3 with three RBI. All but one player hit safely for the Owls.

Smith will resume NEWMAC play with a trip to Springfield College on Friday, April 13 at 3 p.m.  Westfield State will play a non-conference doubleheader, hosting Keene State on April 12 at 3 p.m.
