Drummond Records 1,000th Kill As Smith Opens Seven Sisters Championship

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SOUTH HADLEY, Mass.--Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) became the fourth player in Smith College history to record 1,000 career kills as the Smith College volleyball team swept Mount Holyoke College and Vassar College to open the Seven Sisters Championship on Saturday morning.

Drummond joins Kate Sorensen '06, who holds the school record with 1,606 kills, Carolyn Holt '98, who had 1,047 kills, and Catherine Shafer '08, who had 1,035 kills.  

Drummond finished with 14 kills, three service aces, and three solo blocks against Mount Holyoke, as Smith won in a sweep for the fifth time this season, by scores of (25-14, 25-22, 25-14) in the opener.  Paige Sarlandt (Cloverdale, Calif./Cloverdale) had 13 kills and hit .705 with three block assists.  Mei-Li Smith (Cypress, Calif./Cypress) had six kills and 19 assists, while Bethany Ashworth (North Falmouth, Mass./Bourne) had 14 assists. 

The Pioneers added a second win of the day with a dominating 3-0 (25-11, 25-9, 25-13) win over Vassar.  It was the first time Smith had defeated the Brewers in eight years.  Drummond added 11 more kills, while Sarlandt had nine kills and five total blocks.

Julie Voorhes (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) had a team high 27 digs, and Mei-Li Smith (Cypress, Calif./Cypress) ahd Sonia Brown (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) had 14 digs each.  Smith also had 16 assists and a pair of service aces, and Ashworth had 15 assists.

The Pioneers will resume play with matches against Bryn Mawr at 9 am and Bryn Mawr at 11:30 am.  Smith has not won a Seven Sisters Championship since 2005.  Smith also won the title in 1986, 1987, 1988, and 1995.
