Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla.--The Smith College softball team dropped both games on the second day of the Gene Cusic Classic, 5-3 to UMass-Dartmouth and 6-2 to Hamilton on Monday. The Pioneers are now 2-2 on the young season.
UMass-Dartmouth
The Pioneers gave up two runs in the top of seventh inning, as the Corsairs broke up a tie game. UMass-Dartmouth struck first when Olivia Kenyo singled in Emily Pontes in the top of the first inning, but Smith tied the score in the bottom half of the inning.
Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais) drew a one out walk, and after moving to second on
Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore)'s single, scored when
Gina Martucci (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township) hit into a fielder's choice.
The Corsairs took a 3-1 lead in the third inning when Pontes hit a one out double, and scored on Samatha Gre's single. Gre scored on Kenyo's second RBI hit of the game.
Smith rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth.
Caroline Kushner (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) led off with a single, and took third on a fielder's choice from Clark.
Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore)'s RBI fielder's choice sent home Kushner, and Clark scored when Martucci grounded out to shortstop.
UMass-Dartmouth pushed the winning run across in the top of the seventh. Becky Willia reached on an error and scored on Jenna Sylvia's RBI single, and Shannon Dron tacked on an insurance run when she scored on a RBI from Pontes.
Martucci drove in two runs for Smith, while striking out five in a complete game effort in the circle. Brown and Kushner each had a pair of hits.
Hamilton
Smith jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the first inning. Kushner led off with a double, and took third on Clark's groundout. Brown drove her home with a double, and scored the second run on a passed ball.
The Continentals got on the board with a single run in the fourth when Monique St. Jarre singled in Sam Miller in the fourth inning. Hamilton added four runs courtesy of three Smith errors in the fifth inning to take the lead for good. A single and two errors loaded the bases with none out, and Olivia Gozdz drove home Ellie Kiernan to tie the score. Miller singled in two runs to give Hamilton the lead for good, and Gozdz completed the scoring when she crossed home on another error.
Another error gave Hamilton their final run in the sixth, when Lisa Faraci scored to make it 6-2.
The errors spoiled another strong effort from
Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore), who struck out two in seven innings of work, while allowing just one earned run. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Jennifer Hsieh (Southport, Conn./Ludlowe) also had a pair of hits and a stolen base.
Smith will have a day off on Tuesday, before returning to action on Wednesday against NYU-Poly at 9 a.m. and The College at Brockport at 11 a.m.
