Softball Sweeps NYU-Poly, Brockport

March 20, 2013

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla.--The Smith College softball team used strong pitching and mashed out 18 hits over two games, beating NYU-Poly 3-1 and The College at Brockport 8-4 at the Gene Cusic Classic on Wednesday.  Smith is now 4-2 this season, matching their win total for all of 2012.

NYU-Poly

Gina Martucci (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township) struck out seven in a complete game effort, scattering seven hits, as Smith came back to beat the Fighting Blue Jays.  NYU-Poly broke up a scoreless game in the fourth inning when Natalia Stockinger singled in Corine Fitzgibbons, but Smith tied the game in the bottom of the frame.

Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore) singled with one out, and moved into scoring position on Martucci's sacrifice bunt.  Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) then reached on an error, allowing Brown to score and tie the game.  A two-out rally gave Smith the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Jennifer Hsieh (Southport, Conn./Ludlowe) singled to start the rally, and took second on Caroline Kushner (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire)'s hit.  Clark's single plated Hsieh to put Smith in front, and Brown singled home Kushner for an insurance run.  NYU-Poly had chances in each of the final two innings, but Martucci and the Smith defense shut the door, as the Blue Jays left two on in the sixth and another runner stranded in the seventh.

Brockport

A 12 hit attack powered Smith past Brockport, as four different players each had two hits, and eight of the nine batters in the lineup recorded at least one hit.

Smith put a two-spot on the board in the first inning, as RBI hits from Brown and Richardson staked the Pioneers to an early lead.  The Pioneers added four more in the second inning.  Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark), Kristina Gaffny (Reading, Mass./Austin Prep), and Hsieh starting the inning with singles to load the bases, and Purington made it 3-0 when she scored on a passed ball.

Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais)'s groundout brought home Gaffny, followed by a double from Brown and a single from Martucci for a 6-0 lead.  The Golden Eagles brokeup the shutout with a run in the top of the fourth, but Smith restored a six run advantage in the bottom half, as Kushner singled, took second on an error, and scored on Martucci's RBI single.

Brockport cut the lead to 7-3 when Erika Lazzaro cracked a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning.  Smith tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth when Joanna Giordano (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay) scored on Hsieh's RBI groundout, but the Golden Eagles set up a tense sixth inning.  Two hits and an error loaded the bases for Brockport, but Brown, who pitched her third complete game of the season, ended the threat by inducing a pair of fielder's choices that kept Brockport off the scoreboard.

The Golden Eagles pulled within 8-4 with a run in the top of the seventh, only to see Brown shut the door, getting Amanda Yuhas to groundout to shortstop to end the game.

Kushner, Brown, Martucci, and Richardson each notched a pair of hits for Smith, with Brown and Martucci each driving in two runs.  Brown struck out two in seven innings of work.

Smith will conclude their Spring Break trip with games against the University of New England at 9 a.m. and Wisconsin-Superior at 11 a.m. on Thursday.
