NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College softball team (6-14, 0-8 NEWMAC) will honor both its seniors when the Pioneers host Massachusetts Institute of Technology (12-9, 2-4 NEWMAC) in a NEWMAC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
Last Meeting: MIT scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 3-2, extra inning win over Smith in the opener of a doubleheader on April 17, 2012. The Engineers took game two by a 9-0 score.
Last Smith Win: Smith posted a 10-4 win over MIT on April 14, 2009. Megan Kiefer was 4-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs, as Smith earned a split with the Engineers. That was the last league game Smith won until a 15-7 win over in the 2012 season.
Smith Overview: Smith snapped a 12 game losing streak by sweeping a doubleheader from Westfield State, 1-0 and 4-3 in nine innings. Gina Martucci was the pitching hero, with 11 strikeouts in a complete game effort in the opener, followed by five innings of relief as she picked up the wins in both games.
MIT Overview: The Engineers were rained out of their NEWMAC series with Babson College on Friday, having lost five of their last six games. Last weekend, MIT was swept by NEWMAC opponents Wellesley and Wheaton, before splitting a non-league doubleheader with UMass-Boston by identical 2-1 scores.
Smith Players to Watch:
Seniors Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark) and Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais) will be honored after today's games. The seniors have both played four years with the program and both are serving as captains this year.
MIT Player to Watch: Senior Leah Alpert is hitting .365 with a team high 10 RBI.
