Game Preview: Softball vs. Springfield

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The second of two NEWMAC doubleheaders for the Smith College softball team (6-16, 0-10 NEWMAC) is a visit from league-leading Springfield College (14-14, 6-2 NEWMAC) on Sunday afternoon.  

Last Meeting:  The Pride took a doubleheader by scores of 12-2 and 8-0 on April 13, 2012.

Last Smith Win:  Megan Keifer was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to lift Smith to a come-from-behind, 6-5 win over Springfield in the NEWMAC tournament on April 23, 2008.  Smith was down 5-0 after three innings, but scored six times in the next three innings to deal the eventual tournament champions their only loss of the tournament.

Smith Overview:  Smith was swept in a NEWMAC doubleheader by MIT on Saturday.   The Pioneers were limited to three hits in the opener, but the second game was much closer.  Down 1-0 in the fourth, Smith tied the game on Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy)'s RBI single, but an error led to the winning run for MIT in the top of the seventh.

Springfield Overview: The Pride have won eight of 10, including doubleheader sweeps of WPI, Clark, and MCLA, and more recently, a split of a NEWMAC doubleheader against Wheaton. Six of the eight wins were shutouts.

Smith Player to Watch:  Sam Chinn (Tuscon, Ariz./St. Gregory) had her first career two hit game in the opener against MIT.

Springfield Player to Watch: Jenna Webb has a NEWMAC leading four home runs and 29 RBI.

Did you know? This matchup will feature two of the top pitchers in the NEWMAC - Smith's Martucci, who has a 3.16 ERA and 59 strikeouts, and Springfield's Jennifer Joseph, who sports a 1.89 ERA with 91 strikeouts.
