Box Score 2 NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College softball team was swept in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader by Springfield College by scores of 7-0 and and 18-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Smith is now 6-18, with an 0-12 NEWMAC record, while Springfield is 16-14, and 8-2 in NEWMAC games.
Game One
The game was scoreless until the third inning, when Springfield scored five times to take an early lead. A pair of Smith errors put two on with none out, and Christina Leader reached on a bunt single for the first run of the game. Jenna Webb doubled in Leader to make it 2-0, and Breann Joyce hit a sacrifice fly to right field that brought in Brelle Engelbrecht. RBI hits from Melissa Nelson and Brittany Lally capped the scoring in the frame.
Springfield tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning when Chelsea Bender led off with a single and Kelsey Blake hit the first of three home runs on the day over the fence in right-center.
Smith was limited to two hits - a single in the third by
Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore) and another in the seventh from
Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy).
Gina Martucci (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township) notched four strikeouts in a complete game effort for Smith, while Jennifer Joseph and Casie Cadorette combined for four strikeouts over seven innings of work. Each allowed one hit.
Game Two
The Pride picked up where they left off, hitting four home runs and getting a no-hitter from starter Ashley Marino.
Blake led off the game with a home run, and the Pride put up eight more runs in the second, sending fourteen batters to the plate. Blake hit a three-run shot in the inning, while Joyce added a two-run home run.
Springfield increased their lead to 15-0 in the third, with Caitie Holik hitting a three run homer in the frame.
Marino carried a perfect game into the fifth inning, retiring the first 13 batters she faced before
Kristina Gaffny (Reading, Mass./Austin Prep) reached on an error.
Smith will play their final home doubleheader of the season, hosting Western New England on April 16 at 3:45 pm. Springfield will travel to Tufts for a non-conference twinbill starting at 3:30 on the same day.
