Box Score CHICOPEE, Mass.--
Gina Martucci (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township) struck out nine in a complete game effort and
Joanna Giordano (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay),
Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore), and
Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) each collected two hits as the Smith College softball team picked up its second shutout of the season with a 3-0 win over Elms College on Wednesday.
Smith is now 8-19, having won more games this season than in each of the past three put together. Elms falls to 9-13.
The Pioneers got the only run they would need in the top of the second inning. Richardson led off with a single down the line in left, and moved to second when
Kristina Gaffny (Reading, Mass./Austin Prep) was hit by a pitch. The bases were loaded after an error allowed
Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark) to reach base, and
Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine/Calais) raked a single to left field for a 1-0 lead.
Smith added another run in the top of the third; with two out,
Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore) reached base on an infield single, and took third on Richardson's double to left field. Gaffny brought home Richardson with a single to left to double the advantage.
Smith tacked on a third run in the seventh inning when
Joanna Giordano (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay) reached on a bunt single and scored on Martucci's sacrifice fly.
Martucci allowed just five hits and lowered her ERA to 2.93, not allowing a runner past second base. It was her 13th complete game of the season.
Smith will resume NEWMAC play this weekend beginning with a trip to Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Friday afternoon. The games will be played at Assumption College. Elms will host Bay Path for a doubleheader on Saturday.
