Game Preview: Softball vs. WPI

April 19, 2013

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College softball team (8-19, 0-12 NEWMAC) will play their final slate of conference games on the road, beginning with a doubleheader against Worcester Polytechnic Institute (9-21, 3-9 NEWMAC) on Friday.  The games will be played at Assumption College.

Last Meeting:  WPI took a doubleheader from Smith by scores of 12-4 and 5-3 on April 14, 2012.

Last Smith Win: Emily Hitzlk pitched a complete game with six strikeouts and no walks, and turned in a 3-for-3 performance at the plate in a 5-3 win over WPI on March 28, 2009.  The win earned Smith a split of a doubleheader.

Smith Overview:  Smith has won two of three, with a 3-0 victory over Elms College on Wednesday afternoon.  GIna Martucci struck out nine in a complete game effort, and supported her own cause with a sacrifice fly.  Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore), Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy), and Joanna Giordano (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay) each collected two hits.

WPI Overview: The Engineers swept a doubleheader from Fitchburg State on Wednesday, ending a stretch of games that saw WPI post just one win in 12 contests.  WPI still has a chance of making the NEWMAC tournament, more than likely needing to win all four scheduled games this weekend.

Smith Player to Watch: Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore) has hit safely in five of her last six games, and has 10 multi-hit games this year.

WPI Player to Watch: Lauren DeFelice leads the team with nine doubles and 15 RBI.

Did you know? These should be two close contests - the WPI and Smith team ERA's (3.56 vs. 4.09) are very close.
