Softball Drops Two One-Run Games To WPI

April 19, 2013

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WORCESTER, Mass.--The Smith College softball team fell in the penultimate New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader of the season to Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Friday afternoon.  The Engineers took game one 4-3 and game two by a score of 2-1.

Smith drops to 8-21 overall and 0-14 in the NEWMAC, while WPI is 11-21, and 5-9 against NEWMAC opposition.

Game One

The Engineers started off strong in game one with three runs in the first inning off two hits.  A series of walks and two Pioneer errors plated Nicole McDonough.  Amanda Pierce's single through the left side sent DiTroia home and a single by Ali LaRue scored another run for WPI making it 3-1 at the end of the first inning.

Smith tied the game in the top of the fourth when Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark) reached base on a walk and proceeded to steal second and score for the Pioneers after a wild pitch. Joanna Giordano (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay) singled to the pitcher and drove home the tying run, making it 3-3.

A McDonough single put her in scoring position and Fekete hit the single that sent her teammate home for the winning run.  McDonough scored two runs on three at bats and recorded one hit in game one.  LaRue led the Crimson and Gray with four hits, one RBI and two stolen bases on the day.

Clare Doolin pitched all seven innings for the win, tallying three strikeouts and allowing three runs on three hits.   Gina Martucci (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township)  shouldered the loss allowing seven hits but only one earned run.

Game Two

Senior Christa Coscia delivered a three-hitter in the second game of the double header.

Coscia threw five hitless innings and tossed for all seven, striking out two.  She improves to 6-10 from the mound.  Smith's Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore) pitched for the entire second game giving up eight hits and two earned runs while taking the loss in game two.

Lauren DiFelice posted a single that drove in the first run in the opening frame of game two.  DiFelice earned three hits on the day.  Singles from Juliana Fekete and Jacquelyne DiTroia in the third inning gave WPI the 2-0 go-ahead.

Smith pulled one back in the top of the seventh.  Joanna Giordano (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay) hit a sacrifice bunt with one out and two runners in scoring position.  She drove in Purington to bring Smith to within one, but WPI shut the door as Caroline Kushner (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) grounded out to the pitcher to end the contest.

WPI's double-header against MIT originally scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed.  A new date will be determined at a later date.  Smith is scheduled to play at Babson tomorrow in a double-header.  The time of the first game has been moved to 2 p.m.
