NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The conference season concludes for the Smith College softball team (8-21, 0-14 NEWMAC) when the Pioneers travel to Babson College (24-10, 10-4 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon. The doubleheader start time has been changed to 2 p.m.
Last Meeting: Smith ended a three year, 41 game conference losing streak with a 15-7 win over the Beavers in the second game of a doubleheader on April 7, 2012.
Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) had a home run and five RBI, and
Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) was 3-for-3 with a double.
Smith Overview: The Pioneers were swept in a doubleheader by Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Friday. Both games were one run contests, and Smith was limited to three hits in each game.
Gina Martucci (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township) and
Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore) both pitched complete games, registering two and five strikeouts respectively.
Babson Overview: Babson did not play on Friday, but swept a non-conference doubleheader from Lesley College on Thursday. Two wins for the Beavers could earn them a bye in the conference tournament next week.
Smith Player to Watch: Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark) scored two runs and reached base three times against WPI.
Babson Player to Watch: Reigning NEWMAC Player of the Year Catie Funk is hitting .474 with five home runs and 22 RBI.
Did you know? A sweep would give Smith at least 10 wins for the first time since the 2008 season.
