Box Score 2 NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College softball team wrapped up New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play with a doubleheader loss to Babson College by scores of 10-0 in the opener and 11-4 in the nightcap on Saturday afternoon.
With the two wins, Babson finishes regular season conference play with a record of 26-10 overall and 12-4 in the NEWMAC. Smith finishes at 8-23, and 0-16 in NEWMAC games.
Game One
Junior Kathleen Conway pitched the 10th no-hitter in Babson College softball history in the opener.
Conway came within a strike of pitching the third perfect game in school history in the opener, as senior Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark) drew a two-out, 3-2 walk in the top of the fifth. Conway then recorded her seventh and final strikeout of the contest to finish off the game.
Offensively, three different Beavers recorded three hits in game one, led by senior captain Catie Funk, who went 3-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs. First-years Emily Morris and Madison Dinaso also finished the game 3-for-3, with Morris posting two doubles, scoring twice, and driving in two.
Game Two
In game two, Babson snapped a 1-1 tie with six runs in the bottom of the third inning, highlighted by a three-run homer by Schmid and a two-run bomb by Morris. Smith got two runs back in the top of the fourth on a two-run triple by first-year Joanna Giordano (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay), but Funk recorded an RBI-double and Schmid added a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning as the Beavers pushed their lead to 10-3.
Pioneers' sophomore Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) hit her first collegiate home run to bring Smith back to within six at 10-4 in the fifth, but Funk punctuated her monster day with a titanic home run to left in the sixth to finish off the 11-4 win.
Schmid finished the nightcap with two home runs and five RBIs, while Funk went 3-for-3 with a homer, two doubles, four runs scored, and two RBIs. Conway (15-4) picked up the win in relief, going 3 1/3 innings and allowing one run on two hits while striking out five. Senior Megan Brain (Pompton Plains, N.J.) started the contest and allowed two earned runs on five hits, walked two and struck out two in 3 2/3 innings.
For the day, Funk finished 6-for-6 with four doubles, a home run, four runs, and six RBIs, raising her batting average to .505 on the season. Morris and Dinaso each added four hits in six at-bats, while first-year Maya Lacy and senior Ashleigh Phelps contributed three hits apiece.
