NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College softball team (4-12, 0-6 NEWMAC) begins a string of five straight home dates by hosting Wellesley College (12-6, 4-2 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon.
Last Meeting: Smith closed out the 2012 season with a doubleheader loss to the Blue, by scores of 12-2 and 10-3.
Last Smith Win: Smith won both games of a doubleheader, 6-5 and 3-2 on April 14, 2007. Taryn Pestalozzi hit a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh to give the Pioneers the win in the opener, and in the nightcap, the Pioneers pushed across the winning run in the sixth inning on Megan Keifer's sacrifice fly.
Smith Overview: The Pioneers fell in a doubleheader to Amherst College on Thursday.
Gina Martucci (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township) was brilliant in the first game, striking out five in a 1-0, eight inning loss. Smith managed just two hits in the second game, falling 8-0 in five innings.
Wellesley Overview: The Blue have won five in a row, the most recent being a sweep of conference rival MIT in a doubleheader on Friday. Wellesley is in a busy stretch of the season, as this is the third doubleheader in four days and part of eight games in five days.
Smith Player to Watch: Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore) has maintained a .400+ batting average all season long, and has recorded a team high eight multi-hit games.
Wellesley Player to Watch: Jayne Ellis the only player to have played in all 18 games for Wellesley, hitting .471 and making just one error in 118 chances at first base.
