Game Preview: Softball vs. WPI

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Smith College softball team (11-7, 4-6) makes the trek to Central Massachusetts for a Friday New England Women's and Men's Athletic Confernece (NEWMAC) twinbill at WPI (16-7, 5-4). First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
 
Last Meeting: The Engineers swept the Pioneers 4-3 and 2-1 on April 19, 2013.
 
The Series: The Pioneers own a 33-18 advantage while WPI has won nine of the last 10. Smith's last win was a 5-3 victory on March 28, 2009. The most recent Pioneer sweep was on April 18, 2008 (1-0, 5-0).
 
Fast Facts: WPI plays its home games on top of a parking garage…the Engineers split a pair of 4-2 decisions with Emerson and are on a three-game winning streak courtesy of a sweep of Worcester State on Wednesday…Caroline Medino is tied for fourth amongst NEWMAC pitchers with eight wins while Clare Doolin is fourth in strikeouts (67)…Amanda Pierce, Kristin Gallagher and Juliana Fekete are all above .400 at the plate this season…Gina Martucci (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township) (1.22 ERA) is tied for first in with 10 wins this season…Joanna Giordano (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay) is hitting .409 with 18 singles, five RBI and seven runs scored…it is the Pioneers second Friday road doubleheader in-a-row…the Smith pitching staff has struck out 103 batters on the year.
 
Next Up: Both teams are in conference action at noon tomorrow as Smith hosts Emerson and WPI heads to Wellesley.
