Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. - Tied at one set apiece, the Smith College volleyball team was unable to upset WPI in NEWMAC action Thursday evening in Harington Auditorium. The Engineers won 3-1 by set scores of 25-15, 26-28, 25-15, 25-15.

The Engineers lift their record to 13-5, 4-3 while the Pioneers drop to 4-14 and 0-7 in conference play.

Sophomore Kat Hurlock established a new career high of 10 digs to go along with four assists and a quartet of digs while Daigle added four block assists. Junior Shay Feeeley doled out 25 assists as freshman Azita Bakhtyari chipped in with 17. Freshman Casey Hunt and junior Cassandra Tomerlin each amassed 22 digs followed by sophomore Ann Kaczowka and freshman Victoria Nassar with 15 and 10, respectively. Freshman Holly Shumway paced the Engineers with five block assists while Hunt also contributed with three aces.

Smith senior Mei-Li Smith (Cypress, Calif./Cypress) posted her second double-double of the season with 30 of the Pioneers 35 assists and 16 digs. Sophomore Elizabeth Peay (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial) delivered 10 kills for the guests to go with eight from classmate Jenna Rubin (Norfolk, Conn./Suffield Academy) and seven from first-year Macarena Rojas (Maipu, Santiago, Chile/Liceo No. 1 Javiera Carrera). Junior Julie Voorhes (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) led all student-athletes with 25 digs as Rojas (18), sophomore Xela Miller (Granada Hills, Calif./James Monroe) (17) and sophomore Sakura Tamaki (New York, N.Y./Fiorello H. LaGuardia) (10) were also members of the double-digit digs club. Rojas, Smith and Voorhes also served up a pair of aces.

With Smith ahead 4-1 in the first set following kill by Rubin, the Engineers took advantage of a pair of attack miscues and a swipe by junior Sam Bircsak to take the 5-4 lead. Neither team had more than a point advantage until Hunt served a pair of aces to make it 14-11. The Crimson and Gray then closed the set, which featured six ties and three lead changes, with an 11-4 run, highlighted by trio of kills and a pair of block assists by Daigle.

The Pioneers enjoyed the lead for the majority of the second set that eventually saw nine ties and six lead changes, including five and three, after the match was tied 20-20. WPI had a chance to take the 2-0 lead following an ace by Hunt; however, Rojas' kill extended the set. An attack miscue combined with a kill by Peay helped the Pioneers take the 25-24 lead. Back-to-back swipes by Daigle turned the advantage back in the Engineers favor (26-25) only to have kills by Rubin and Peay sandwich a miscue to even the match.

WPI never trailed in the final two frames. Smith, however, staved off four set points in the third thanks to a kill by Peay, an ace by Voorhes and a pair of Engineer miscues. The Boynton Hillers closed out the victory with the last five points of the fourth, including a pair of aces from Kaczowka and a match-ending kill by Hurlock.

The Pioneers are off until Thursday when they head to MCLA for a 7pm first serve.
