Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. - The Smith College softball team took both games of a doubleheader Sunday, defeating Trinity College, 12-0 in six innings before besting Concordia University (Wisc.), 9-3 in game two.
The Pioneers' bats came alive in the first game, pounding out a season-high 15 hits in the 12-0 win over Trinity College. The victory snapped a six-game losing streak to the Bantams, and was the first win for Smith over Trinity since 2005.
Smith got on the board in the top of the first inning, plating a run on a
Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore) single into right field that scored
Brittney Blokker (Seattle, Wash./Ballard), who led off the inning with a single. The Pioneers scored two more runs in the inning on RBI-singles by
Rowan Turner (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) and
Sarah Tully (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury).
Three runs was more than enough for
Gina Martucci (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township), who faced just three batters over the minimum. Martucci recorded a complete-game shutout, throwing all six innings, allowing two hits while striking out nine and walking two.
The Pioneers added two more in the fifth, as Turner's infield single ate up the Bantams' shortstop and forced an overthrow at first that brought Brown in from second and Blokker from third.
Smith broke the game open in the top of the sixth, as Tully led off the inning with a single through the left side. After
Kristina Gaffny (Reading, Mass./Austin Prep) reached on an overthrow by Trinity's catcher, Blokker loaded up the bases with a five-pitch walk. Giordano cleared the bases with a stand-up triple, putting Smith ahead, 8-0 with no outs in the frame. Brown brought Giordano in with an infield single, and advanced to second on a single to left field by
Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy). Turner and Tully added RBI-singles to close out the scoring for Smith.
Seven Pioneers notched at least one hit, with four tallying multi-hit games including Tully, who went 4-for-4 at the dish with three RBIs. Turner went 3-for-4 with a run scored and three driven in, while Brown went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and two driven in. Blokker went 2-for-3 in game one, scoring three runs, drawing a walk and stealing two bases.
Smith kept their foot on the pedal in game two, scoring nine runs on 13 hits in a 9-3 romp of the Falcons.
Concordia struck first, manufacturing a run on a hit and an error to go ahead, 1-0 in the top of the second.
The Falcons lead didn't last long, as
Caroline Kushner (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) roped a one-out double to left in the home half of the second to give the Pioneers life. Tully singled up the middle on the next pitch, bringing home Kushner and tying the score, 1-1.
Allison Snyder (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) crushed a 2-2 pitch to the wall in the left that just stayed in the park, bringing Tully in from second to put Smith up, 2-1. Blokker followed with a double to the gap in left to push the Pioneers advantage to 3-1.
The Pioneers put up a four-spot in the third, before the Falcons scored a pair to make it 7-3.
Smith scored two more in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by
Natalie Burchat (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury)'s single to right center to score Turner from second.
Turner got her first collegiate win on the hill, throwing five innings, allowing one earned run on five hits while striking out two and did not walk a batter. Burchat threw two innings in relief and did not allow a hit.
Four Pioneers posted multi-hit games- Brown (2-for-4), Kushner (2-for-2), Tully (2-for-2), and Snyder (2-for-3) while nine different Smithies recorded at least one hit in the win.
Tully went 6-for-6 in the two games with six runs batted in, while Brown is currently hitting .571 after going 5-for-8 on the day.
Smith is back in action tomorrow to take on SUNY-Geneseo (5 p.m.) and Endicott College (7 p.m.). Â
