Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – Junior
Gina Martucci (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township) picked up her third win of the season in the circle for the Smith College softball team as they defeated SUNY-Geneseo, 3-1 in the first game of a twin-bill at The Spring Games Monday.
The Pioneers went 1-1 on the day, falling to Endicott College, 6-2 in the night cap.
Smith struck first in game one, scoring a run on two hits and a SUNY-Geneseo error in the top of the third. Sophomore
Ruth Zimmerman (Edison, N.J./John P. Stevens) got things started with a one-out single through the left side. After the second out of the inning was made, Zimmerman stole second and advanced to third on an infield single by sophomore
Brittney Blokker (Seattle, Wash./Ballard). Junior
Joanna Giordano (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay) brought Zimmerman in from third with a slap hit that the Knights' pitcher couldn't handle, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth, the Pioneers added another run on a pair of errors by the Knights infield, and added an insurance run in the fifth on a Giordano RBI-single.
Martucci allowed one run on three hits while striking out six and walking just one to improve to 3-1. With the win, the reigning New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Pitcher of the Year lowers her league-leading earned run average (ERA) to 0.69.
Four Pioneers picked up hits in the opener, with Zimmerman, sophomore
Sarah Tully (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury), Giordano and Blokker each tallying a base knock.
In the night-cap, the Gulls of Endicott College and the Pioneers combined for eight errors, but Endicott scored the final four runs of the game to pull away for the 6-2 win. Smith tied the contest, 2-2 in the bottom of the second, but the Gulls posted a run in the fourth and added three in the seventh to put the game away for good.
Giordano had another big game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, a stolen base and a RBI. She has now collected a hit in five-straight games this season. Junior
Caroline Kushner (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) also went 2-for-3 at the dish, tallying her third multi-hit game of the season.
Suffering the loss in the circle for Smith was first-year
Rowan Turner (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East), who went the distance, throwing all seven innings, allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out a season-best six batters.
Smith is scheduled to return to the diamond on Wednesday, March 18 when they open NEWMAC play against Babson College. The first game of the conference doubleheader begins at 9 a.m.
