Pioneers Wrap Up NTC Spring Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The Smith Pioneers concluded play in the NTC Spring Games Thursday in Clermont, Fla. with a pair of tough losses. Smith lost to Hope College, 3-2 in the first game of the day before falling 9-3 to Bowdoin College.

Smith got out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first against Hope. Joanna Giordano (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay) led off with a single through the left side, promptly stealing second and giving the Pioneers a runner in scoring position. After the Flying Dutch recorded the first out of the inning, Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore) singled back up the middle to score Giordano for the first run of the game.

Hope struck for three runs in the bottom half of the first. The Pioneers got one run back in the top of the fourth, when Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) hit her first home run of the season, and seventh of her career, to right center to get Smith to within one, 3-2.

Richardson went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI, while Giordano went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. Brown, Rowan Turner (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) and Allison Snyder (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) also recorded hits for the Pioneers.

Turner pitched six strong innings for the Pioneers. She allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out three. Kate Laverty earned the win in the circle for the Flying Dutch, allowing two runs on four hits over four innings of work, while Katie Singer picked up a three inning save in relief of Laverty.

Smith bowed to Bowdoin in the second game Thursday, 9-3. The Polar Bears scored the first run of the game in the first inning before adding another in the third and seven in the fourth.

Allison Snyder (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) paced the Pioneers at the plate with a 1-for-2 performance that included her first collegiate home run, a no doubt about it shot to deep center that drew Smith to within six runs in the fifth inning. Turner went 2-for-2 with a walk, while Richardson went 1-for-3 with a run scored in.

Julia Geaumont earned the win. She tossed a complete game and allowed just four hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Gina Martucci (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township) absorbed the loss. She allowed two runs on four hits with five strikeouts and no walks over three innings.

The Pioneers are scheduled to host their first home game of the season on March 25 against Western New England University.
