Brittney Blokker (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) and senior
Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) each hit a home run Saturday at Emerson College, but the Lions rallied twice to sweep the Pioneers in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.
Emerson 7, Smith 3 Emerson's Ellis Alvarez pitched three innings in relief, limiting the Pioneers to one run on a pair of hits to pick up her first win of the day, and third win of the season.
Smith first-year
Rowan Turner (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) absorbed the complete-game loss, allowing seven runs, of which none were earned, on 10 hits while striking out three.
The Pioneers scored the game's first run, as Richardson belted her third home run of the season, a solo-shot in the top of the second, to stake Smith to a 1-0 lead.
Smith added a run in the third when junior
Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore) singled to score Turner from second.
The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth, when a two-out error by Smith's infield kept the inning alive. The Lions capitalized, scoring all seven of their runs to take a commanding 7-2 advantage.
Blokker led off the top of the seventh with her first career home run to draw the Pioneers to within four, but the Lions induced an untimely double play to end the threat and seal the win.
Three Pioneers tallied multi-hit games in the opener, as sophomore
Sarah Tully (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) went 2-for-3 at the dish with a pair of two-baggers. Richardson went 2-for-4 with a home run, while Brown went 2-for-4 with a run batted in.
Emerson 5, Smith 4 It was the Lions in game two who used a solo home run in the first inning to stake claim to an early 1-0 lead. The Pioneers countered in the top of the second, as sophomore
Allison Snyder (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) stole third and came around to score on the overthrow to third.
Emerson, meanwhile, scored a run in both the second and the fourth to reclaim the lead.
That lead lasted until the top of the sixth, as Snyder's RBI-single and sophomore
Ruth Zimmerman (Edison, N.J./John P. Stevens)'s RBI-groundout gave Smith a 4-3 lead.
The Lions chipped away at Smith's lead in the bottom of the sixth, adding the equalizer before walked off in the seventh with a RBI-single.
Sophomore
Natalie Burchat (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) was handed the loss, throwing six and two-third innings, allowing five runs on nine hits.
Snyder led the Pioneers at the dish in game two, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a run driven in. Burchat, Blokker, Turner, Brown, Richardson and junior
Caroline Kushner (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) each notched a base hit in the nightcap.
Smith is scheduled to travel to Clark tomorrow for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
