Box Score 2 NORTON, Mass. – The Smith College Pioneers suffered a pair of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) losses on the road Friday to the 20
th-ranked Wheaton College Lyons. The Pioneers lost the first game of the doubleheader 12-0 before falling 10-2 in the second game.
The Lyons hit a pair of home runs in the first game, as back-to-back home runs by Wheaton during their nine-run bottom of the first inning.
Sophomore second baseman
Brittney Blokker (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) led the Pioneers at the plate in the first game with a 2-for-2 performance.
Rowan Turner (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) suffered the loss in Game 1, dropping her season record to 2-7. She allowed 12 runs, only eight of which were earned, on 16 hits. Turner struck out three batters and issued one walk. Emily Berardi earned the win, upping her season record to 11-1. She refused to give up a run on six hits with one strikeout and no walks.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the third, Smith went to work, with Blokker roping the first pitch of the inning back up the middle for a base hit. Junior
Joanna Giordano (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay) followed with a single up the middle of her own, and both runners advanced on a throwing error by Wheaton's centerfielder. Turner followed with a RBI-single to left, and junior
Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore) singled through the left side to score Giordano from third to tie the contest, 2-2.
The Lyons got the lead right back with a three-spot in the home half of the third, and a five-run fourth gave Wheaton all the runs they needed.
Giordano and Brown each had two hits in the second game for the Pioneers while Turner, senior
Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy), sophomore
Allison Snyder (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury), sophomore
Sarah Tully (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) and Blokker each recorded a hit. Richardson's 98
th career hit gives her sole possession of 15
th place on Smith's all-time career hit list.
The Pioneers (8-16, 3-11 NEWMAC) will return to action Saturday when they host the Coast Guard Academy for a NEWMAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
