Springfield Hits Past Volleyball 3-0

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Elizabeth Peay (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial) led Smith with seven kills and Macarena Rojas (Maipu, Santiago, Chile/Liceo No. 1 Javiera Carrera) added six, but the Springfield Pride earned a 3-0 victory over the Smith College Volleyball Team in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Thursday. ,

The Pride, ranked fourth in this week's New England Women's Volleyball Association poll, took the match with set scores of 25-11, 25-14, and 25-19 and were led by 10 kills from Lauren Holt and nine from first-year Hayley Kmetz.,

The two teams opened the match by exchanging the first 10 points before Springfield went on a 6-0 run to pull in front 11-5., After a Smith kill pulled the Pioneers to 18-10, Springfield went on a 7-1 run to close out the first set.,

The Pride continued to ride their momentum into the second set, opening up a 5-1 advantage before back-to-back Smith points, the second coming on an Ella Prince (New York, N.Y./Rudolf Steiner) kill., Halfway through the second set, Springfield led 12-4 before Mei-Li Smith (Cypress, Calif./Cypress) brought the Pioneers within six following one of her three kills., After alternating points to 21-12, Springfield ended the set with a 4-2 run.

In the third set, three consecutive service aces gave the Pride an early 4-1 lead, but behind a .229 hitting percentage in the third set, Smith battled back to take a 12-10 lead after three consecutive points on a kill by Xela Miller (Granada Hills, Calif./James Monroe), a Smith service ace, and a Peay kill., Springfield rallied to pull in front 14-12 before the Pioneers pulled level at 14-14, 15-15, and 18-18., At 18 apiece, the Pride won seven of the final eight points in the match, closing out the victory on Kmetz's ninth kill.

Smith led the Pioneers with 18 assists and a pair of service aces, and Julie Voorhes (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) recorded double-digit digs for the 10th consecutive match with 12.,

Smith continues NEWMAC play on Saturday with a visit to MIT at 12 p.m. as part of a tri-match with the Engineers and Regis., Smith and Regis will meet at 2 p.m.
