Softball Falls to Frostburg, Edges Becker at NTC Spring Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. - Sophomore Rowan Turner (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) belted her first homerun of the season in game one of the day and Smith knocked out 15 hits in the second game as the Pioneers dropped a 15-4 decision to Frostburg State University before earning an 8-6 win over Becker Monday afternoon.

Game 1: Frostburg 15 Smith 4

The Bobcats plated six runs in the first inning and never trailed. With the bases loaded, Taylor Blevins hit a three run triple and then scored from a RBI single from Ali Caulkins.

FSU scored again in the second inning when Blevins hit an RBI single. Smith finally got on the board in the third inning from a homerun from Turner.

The Pioneers showed their best offensive effort in the fourth inning as Kristina Gaffny (Reading, Mass./Austin Prep) led off with a single to right and advanced to second on a wild pitch. An error by the FSU pitcher allowed Gaffny to score, while Sarah Tully (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury)'s single up the middle scored Ruth Zimmerman (Edison, N.J./John P. Stevens).

Tully finished 2-for-2 in game one and Turner took the loss for the Pioneers.


Game 2: Smith 8 Becker 6

In the circle, Natalie Burchat (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) earned the win after 3.0 innings of work, allowing five hits and four runs. Turner recorded the save, striking out three in 4.0 innings of work.

Offensively, Smith's bats were on fire as six Pioneers recorded multi-hit games.

After Becker took a 1-0 lead in the second, the Pioneers scored six runs on six hits to take a 6-1 lead after their half of the third inning. Kraus, Tully, DeAngelo and Snyder each recorded a RBI in the inning.

Becker pulled three runs back in the bottom of the third on four hits to come within 6-4.

Lydia DeAngelo (Portsmouth, R.I./Moses Brown School) singled to left to start the fifth, advanced to second on an error and made her way to third on a Brittney Blokker (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) single. Caroline Kushner (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire)'s SAC fly scoerd DeAngelo, which proved to be the winning run of the afternoon. The Pioneers added an insurance run in the seventh as Blokker scored on a Kushner single up the middle.

Smith (3-3) will take tomorrow off before the Pioneers open up NEWMAC play with a doubleheader against Babson on Wednesday at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.
