The Pioneers are now 9-17 overall and 6-8 in conference play.
Game 1: Smith 8 Emerson 0 (Final 5 Innings)
Junior pitcher
Natalie Burchat (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) allowed only two hits and struck out five with no walks in the win. Snyder,
Brittney Blokker (Seattle, Wash./Ballard),
Rowan Turner (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) and
Alyssa Pioggia (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) all went 2-for-3 at the plate. Blokker and Pioggia each had two RBI.Â
Already up 1-0, the Pioneers exploded for six runs on six hits in the second inning. Pioggia led off with a single to right field and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Burchat. First-year
Lydia DeAngelo (Portsmouth, R.I./Moses Brown School)'s single allowed Pioggia to reach third and would eventually score when
Joanna Giordano (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay) got to base on a fielders choice. Three consecutive singles by Smith would score DeAngelo and Giordanno. A bases loaded walk to
Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore) scored Blokker and a Pioggia single up the middle scored two more runs to give Smith a 7-0 lead.
The Pioneers tacked on one more in the third on a RBI single from Blokker.
Game 2: Smith 1 Emerson 2
In game two, Smith's bats struggled, only recording five hits. Snyder and Pioggia each went 2-for-3 at the dish with Snyder finishing with a RBI and one run scored. Turner took the loss in a complete game effort, allowing two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts.Â
A Smith error allowed Emerson to get one run on the board in the third inning. The Lions would double their lead in the fifth when another Pioneer error let in a run.Â
Snyder kept Smith's hope for a comeback alive when she set the home run record in the sixth inning, cutting the deficit to 2-1. A 1-2-3 seventh inning by Emerson sealed the win giving the Lions their first conference victory of the season.
Prior to the game, Smith honored their four seniors:
Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore),
Kristina Gaffny (Reading, Mass./Austin Prep), Joanna Giordanno and
Caroline Kushner (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire).
The Pioneers return to action Tuesday when they travel to Brandeis for a doubleheader slated to begin at 4 p.m.
