Softball Drops a Pair to MIT Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College softball team dropped a pair of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) games to MIT Saturday afternoon. 

Game 1: MIT 5 Smith 0

Sophomore pitcher Rowan Turner (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) shouldered the loss in five innings of work, allowing four hits and two earned runs. MIT ace Alexandra Marshall (8-4) earned the win, giving up four hits and recording three strikeouts.

With two outs in the top of the first, MIT struck for an early 2-0 lead. Amanda Lee and Tori Jensen singled and came around to score on a double by Kim Veldee. The Engineers tacked on one in the sixth and two more in the seventh for the 5-0 final.

Smith had a chance in the fifth as Emma Kraus (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield) singled and then stole second. She then advanced to third on Blokker's single but an outstanding defensive play by the MIT first baseman ended the Pioneers' momentum. 

Five different student-athletes recorded hits for the Pioneers.

Game 2: MIT 10 Smith 2 - Six Innings

MIT freshman Ravenne Nasser (3-1) earned her third win of the season, allowing one earned run, two hits and three strikeouts. Smith junior Natalie Burchat (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) (4-3) took the loss on 5 2/3 innings, nine runs (seven earned), ten hits, three walks and five strikeouts. 

The Engineers put two on the board in the top of the first inning. Freshman Erika Anderson reached on an error by the seond baseman, allowing Jensen and Lee to score. 

Smith got a run back in the third as Blokker's fielders choice allowed Ally Snyder to score. In the fifth, Snyder led off with a single up the middle and would eventually score on Blokker's single to right field.

In the sixth, the Engineers' bats exploded, as MIT added five runs on five hits nad sent ten batters to the plate in the frame.

Snyder went 2-for-2 at the plate while Blokker finished with 2 RBI.


The Pioneers look to get back in the win column when they travel to Westfield State Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
