Snyder Sets Home Run Records In Split vs. Wheaton

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Junior Allison Snyder (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) set two new home run records as the Smith College softball team earned a split with Wheaton College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers took game one 8-6, before falling 8-1 in the finale. 

Snyder's hit out of the park in the second game set a new school record with 15 in a career and eight in a season. Both previous records were set by Snyder. 

Smith finished conference play with a 9-9 record, tied with Wellesley and Springfield. Due to tiebreaking procedures, Wellesley claimed the No. 5 seed and Springfield took the final seed in the conference tournament. 

GAME 1: Smith 8 Wheaton 6

The first game was a reschedule from Friday, April 22 and left off tied 5-5 in the bottom of the second inning with one out and a Smith runner on first base.

The Lyons added a run in he third inning on an error by the Smith defense to take a 6-5 lead. In the sixth, Lydia DeAngelo (Portsmouth, R.I./Moses Brown School)'s single down the right field line scored Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore) and Alyssa Pioggia (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow). Blokker's single to third allowed DeAngelo to score and proved to be all the Pioneers would need for the 8-6 win. 

Junior pitcher Natalie Burchat (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) went the full seven innings, allowing six runs on 12 hits with no walks. 

Junior Sarah Tully (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) had a perfect day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBI. Snyder and DeAngelo each collected two hits for the Pioneers. 

GAME 2: Smith 1 Wheaton 8

The Lyons exploded for 14 hits as Wheaton struck in the third inning when Caroline Fairbanks doubled to left field scoring Emma Hart and Madeline Hatch.

Snyder's record breaking home run in the third inning accounted for the only Smith run of the game.  

Wheaton poured on the offense in the fifth inning as the Lyons scored four runs and added another two in the sixth. 

Sophomore Rowan Turner (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) took the loss for Smith, while Allison Coz earned the win in the circle for Wheaton, improving her record to 10-2 on the season. 

Turner collected two hits for the Pioneers. 

Hart, Fairbanks and Hatch each recorded three hits for the Lyons.

The Pioneers travel to Westfield State tomorrow for a non-conference doubleheader with the Owls beginning at 3:30 p.m.
