Softball Drops NEWMAC Doubleheader at Springfield

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Smith College softball team dropped a pair of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) games to Springfield College Friday afternoon at Stagg Field. The Pride blanked the Pioneers in game one, 3-0 and completed the sweep with a 9-3 victory in the nightcap.

Springfield improves to 13-7 overall with a league record of  6-2, while the Pioneers are now 6-12 on the season and 3-5 in conference.

Game 1: Springfield 3 Smith 0

Loda pitched a complete-game, four-hit shutout en route to her fifth win of the season, as she also picked up five strikeouts on the afternoon. Her counterpart, Rowan Turner (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) pitched six innings, giving up seven hits and two earned runs, while also fanning three Pride batters.

At the dish, the duo of seniors Jenna Webb and Melissa Nelson eached registered an RBI, while Alicia Pavadore was 2-for-3 at the plate in the contest.

For the Pioneers, Allison Snyder (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury), Brittney Blokker (Seattle, Wash./Ballard), Rowan Turner (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) and Alyssa Pioggia (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) each recorded hits. 

It took until the bottom of the fifth inning to break the silence, but with one-out and the bases loaded, Sam Cox drilled a ground ball to third, but an error on the play allowed Jenna Webb to cross home and give the Pride a 1-0 lead heading into the sixth inning.

Springfield tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth and Loda came out in the top of the seventh and picked up the final three outs to earn the shut-out victory. 

Game 2: Springfield 9 Smith 3

Nicole Cring got the nod for the Pride, and pitched 3.2 strong innings, giving up just five hits and two runs, while striking out a pair, before Jordyn Moquin came on to pitch 2.1 innings, and held the Pioneers to three hits and one run. Shelby Allen came on to get the Pride's final three outs, as she struck out a pair to seal the victory.

Smith got on the board first in the top of the second when Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore) roped an RBI single to right field, scoring Caroline Kushner (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire), before Elizabeth Joseph's home run in the bottom half of the frame gave the Pride a 2-1 advantage.

The Pioneers added another run in the top of the third inning, but Springfield quickly broke the tie when Jenna Webb stung a two-run double to right center, before Cox hit a deep fly to left, scoring the senior to put the Pride up 5-2 after three.

After another Smith run in the top of the fifth that cut the Pioneers' deficit to a pair, Springfield quickly regained its three-run lead when Dani Gray singled to right, driving in Cox, before the Pride added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to close out Smith.

Allen came into the game in the top of the seventh and struck out a pair to seal the win.

Turner had a perfect day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a double, triple and two runs scored. Sarah Tully (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury), Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore) and Caroline Kushner (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) each registered an RBI for the Pioneers. In the circle, Natalie Burchat (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) took the loss allowing five runs on five hits in 2.1 innings of work. Brown came on in relief, giving up four runs and three walks.
