Box Score 2 NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Smith College pounded out 18 hits and received complete games from junior
Natalie Burchat (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) and sophomore
Rowan Turner (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) to sweep Wellesley College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball action Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers found themselves in a 5-0 deficit in game one but rallied to earn a 10-9 win before taking the nightcap by a 5-1 score.
Smith is now 8-12 overall and 5-5 in conference play while the Blue fall to 8-10 and 4-4 in the NEWMAC.
Game 1: Smith 10 Wellesley 9Turner went 3-for-4 at the plate, while
Allison Snyder (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) and
Sarah Tully (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) each went 2-for-3. Snyder belted a home run and drove in two runs as Tully finished game one with three RBI. Burchat earned the win as she struck out five batters.Â
Junior Anna Pisac got the offense rolling for Wellesley on her homer to center field, giving the Blue a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Wellesley tacked one more run in the first and one in the second to take a 5-0 advantage.
A seven run second frame from the Pioneers gave the home team a 7-5 lead as Smith took advantage of three errors by Wellesley.Â
Freshman Veronica Locher's single to center field scored two runs to tie the game at 7-7 but Snyder's home run and Tully's two-run double put the Pioneers ahead 10-7.Â
Wellesley added two more in the top of the seventh but Burchat forced a ground out to end the game.Â
Game 2: Smith 5 Wellesley 1Brittney Blokker (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) and Turner each went 2-for-3 at the dish with one RBI and combined for three runs in game two. In the circle, Turner produced a strong outing allowing only one run on 11 hits.Â
An exciting play in the first gave the Pioneers an early 3-0 lead. Blokker and Turner each singled to give Smith base runners for Tully, who doubled and advanced to third on the throw home and would come around to score on an error by the Wellesley catcher.Â
Smith added two more runs in the fifth as Blokker's triple scored Snyder and Turner's single allowed Blokker to reach home.Â
Wellesley's Pisac tripled to right field, scoring the only run for the Blue in game two.Â
The Pioneers will return to action on Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader with Amherst beginning at 3:30 p.m.
