Box Score 2 NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College volleyball team shouldered a pair of tough home losses on Saturday, falling 3-0 to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent MIT and 3-0 to Simmons College in a non-conference match. The Pioneers are now 2-10 overall and 0-5 in conference action.
GAME 1: MIT 3 SMITH 0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-18)
Nearly the entire roster appeared in a set for the MIT volleyball team, who remain undefeated in NEWMAC play Saturday. Their high-powered offense hit .409 in the second set and .270 for the game as the Engineers finish the day at 12-3 overall and 4-0 in the NEWMAC.
MIT rattled off eight straight points in the first set to take a commanding 21-8 lead. In the second, the Pioneers stayed on the heels of the Engineers at 11-10 until the visitors went on a 14-0 run to close out the match. Trailing 24-10, the Pioneers strung together five points, which forced a timeout from the visitors but a service error from Smith completed the sweep for MIT.
Meghan Gebhard notched a game-high seven kills, while Shea Landeene and Alli Davanzo finished with five each. Fiona Tanuwidjaja ran the offense to the tune of 13 assists and classmate Tori Wuthrich registered 12 digs.
Helena Wiatrowski (Winchester, Mass./Winchester),
Kimani Freeman (Newark, N.J./Montclair Kimberly Academy) and
Ella Prince (New York, N.Y./Rudolf Steiner) all finshed with five kills for the Pioneers.
Maca Rojas (Santiago, Chile/Liceo No. 1 Javiera Carrera) produced 16 assists while
Julie Voorhes (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) added 11 digs.
GAME 2: SIMMONS 3 SMITH 0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-19)
The Sharks best performance of the afternoon came in the first set as the Sharks hammered down 13 kills, hitting .357. Simmons jumped out to an 11-3 advantage but the Pioneers responded and found themselves trailing 14-10 on a kill from Prince. A valiant effort from the Pioneers was turned away by the Sharks, who closed out set one by scoring five-straight points. In set two, a kill from
Helena Wiatrowski (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) gave the Pioneers a 9-8 lead in a tightly contested match that resulted in Simmons pulling ahead down the stretch. An 8-0 run from the visitors midway through the final set allowed them to sweep the match.
The Sharks were led by Morgan Weeg's 12 kills and Kenna McCarthy's game-high 35 assists. Alex Isataka fnished with 16 digs.
Pacing Smith in the final match was
Elizabeth Peay (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial) with eight kills and three blocks. Freeman producued five service aces while Rojas finished with 20 assists. Voorhes posted a team-best 20 digs.
The Pioneers return to action on Tuesday when they look to pick up their first league win of the season at Emerson at 7:00 p.m.
