THE SERIES
The game marks the 39th meeting between the two programs, dating back to the first contest during the 1999 season - a 2-0 Coast Guard victory. The Bears lead the series 24-14. Smith has won the last four meetings
LAST MEETING
Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore) homered in each game and drove in five runs leading Smith to a NEWMAC sweep of Coast Guard. The Pioneers won the opener 7-4 and the nightcap 10-2 in six innings. Senior
Caroline Kushner (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) also recorded her 100th career hit.
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
Smith looks to sweep Coast Guard for the third consecutive season in today's game against the Bears. The Pioneers are coming off a sweep at the hands of Williams College on Tuesday (8-2, 9-1). In game one, senior
Brittney Blokker (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) ripped a two-run homer while
Ruth Zimmerman (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) and
Emma Kraus (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield/Dupon-Kraus Homeschool) each recorded doubles. Offensively, the Pioneers are led by Blokker's .372 batting average with 32 hits and 22 RBI. Senior
Ally Snyder (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) currently holds the school record for home runs in a season (8) and career (19) and is hitting .351 with 26 hits and 27 RBI. The Pioneers were selected to finish 8th in the NEWMAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
SCOUTING THE BEARS
Coast Guard enters today's doubleheader on a three-game win streak after their non-conference 8-2 victory over Bay Path on Tuesday. In that game, freshman Claire Hurley went 3-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored as CGA scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Leading the Bears pitching staff this season will be freshman Julia Ferris who is 9-10 with a 4.22 ERA and 53 strikeouts. The outfield will be anchored by junior Emma Hvozdovich who has played every game but one since her freshman year. Hvozdovich is batting .368 with 28 hits and 15 RBI. Courtney McKenna is having an outstanding start to her collegiate career as the rookie is leading the NEWMAC in batting average (.495) and is third in RBI (31). Coast Guard was picked to finish 7th in the NEWMAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
UP NEXT
The Pioneers will play their final regular season NEWMAC games Sunday at Wheaton.
