Softball Earns 9-2 Victory over Elms

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHICOPEE, Mass. - The Smith College softball team earned a 9-2 win over Elms College in game one of the non-conference doubleheader between the two teams. In the second game of the twinbill, the result was a 3-3 tie after six innings of play. The Pioneers move to 7-21-1 on the season, while the Blazers are now 8-15-1. 

Game 1 – Smith 9, Elms 2

The Blazers jumped out a 1-0 lead on an Emily Dorosh single that scored Kayla Doherty in the bottom of the second inning. The Pioneers would tie things up in the top of the fifth on a fielders choice that scored Stephanie Konas (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central). The visitors would then take a commanding lead with a five spot in th sixth and three more in the seventh to collect the 9-2 win.

Makena Wagner (Hilo, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Hawaii) led the way offensively for the Pioneers with three hits and three RBI. Jess Flohr earned the win, allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts.

Game 2 – Elms 3, Smith 3 (6 innings)

The Blazers struck first when Maddison Messier singled in Tyle Risucci. Elms would load the bases in the bottom of the fourth but were unable to push anyone across the plate.

The Pioneers would score their first runs of the game in the top of the fifthplating three runs to jump out in front of the Blazers. Wagner ripped a two run double which scored Jane Casey Fleener and Lucy Grant (Bethel, Conn./Notre Dame Catholic). Eryn Lee's (Saratoga, Calif./Saratoga) single scored Wagner for 3-1 lead.

Elms came right back in the bottom of the frame scoring two runs to tie things up at 3-3 on a passed ball and a fields choice.

The game would end in a 3-3 tie due to darkness.

Wagner, Rachel Newhall, and Grant each finished with two hits. Flohr let up one run on six hits with three strikeouts.

Smith resumes NEWMAC action and will travel to MIT on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
