Volleyball Drops Decision to Emerson

Box Score BOSTON, MASS. -  The Smith College volleyball team fell 3-0 to Emerson College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest on Tuesday evening. The scores in favor of the Lions were 23-25, 17-25, and 14-25. Emerson improves to 12-2 on the year and 4-2 in conference play, while the Pioneers move to 16-7, 3-4.

Highlights
  • Emerson began the first set with an 8-3 lead until Smith responded with a six-point run capped off with back-to-back aces from Ari Cross (Wauwatosa, Wis./Rufus King) to pull slightly ahead 9-8
  • The Lions regained the advantage until the Pioneers brought the score back to a tie at 13-13
  • Emerson pulled away with a 4-0 run and held the lead for the remainder of the set, ending the first round 25-23 
  • In the second set, Smith kept the Lions in close quarters with several ties until they held a slight 10-9 edge over Emerson
  • The Lions responded with a 6-1 run to pull away from the Pioneers and take a 15-11 lead 
  • Despite a pair of kills from Abby Hunt (Mandeville, La./Fontainebleau) and Mia Moscicki (Medford Lakes, N.J./Shawnee), Emerson finished the second set 25-17
  • The final frame saw Emerson jump out to a 12-6 lead, which they kept throughout the final set
  • Hunt led the Pioneers with 10 kills
  • Sophia Padilla (Fontana, CA/Saint Lucy's Priory) totaled 20 assists and 10 digs while Gabby Beckman (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) recorded nine digs
  • The Pioneers hit .192 for the match
