Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Tori Brown (New Market, Md./Linganore) and Caroline Kushner (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) each had three hits and Gina Martucci (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township) spun her third complete-game victory as the Smith College softball team split a pair of games on Wednesday at the Gene Cusic Classic. The Pioneers opened the day with an 8-0, six-inning, victory over Knox and were on the opposite end of a 7-0 decision to Brockport in the nightcap.

Smith is now 4-1 with two games remaining in its spring break slate. The Pioneers conclude the trip tomorrow with an 11:00 a.m. game against Wisconsin-Platteville and a 1:00 p.m. matinee against Alfred State.

Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) and Ruth Zimmerman (Edison, N.J./John P. Stevens) were also part of the multi-hit club with two apiece. Natalie Burchat (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) and Allison Snyder (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) each smacked a double as Snyder and Brittney Blokker (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) each scored twice. Sarah Tully (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) chipped in with three RBI. Martucci tossed a three-hit shutout and fanned 10 while Burchat struck out six Brockport batters.

Martucci and the defense set down the first nine Knox batters while the offense built a 5-0 lead. Kushner singled in the first run as Snyder scampered home on a passed ball as the Pioneers held a 2-0 advantage after one. Tully used a run-producing single to drive in Blokker and Richardson as Brown followed with an RBI single for the 5-0 cushion in the third.

Smith tacked on a run in the fifth courtesy of a sacrifice fly off Tully's bat. An inning later, Kushner reached on an infield miscue allowing Snyder to cross home plate. Richardson plated the eighth run of the contest with a sacrifice fly to right field. Knox had a runner in scoring position with two outs but the game ended on a popup to second base.

In the second game, Blokker and Burchat recorded the only two Pioneer hits of the contest as only four batters reached at least first base. Blokker reached on a one-out single to center field in the second as Burchat sent a double to left center in the fifth. Most of the damage was done in the Brockport third as the Golden Eagles pushed five across highlighted by a single that drove in a pair.
