Game Preview: Softball vs. Coast Guard

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Smith College softball team (14-10, 7-9) closes out its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season slate with a road trip to Coast Guard (13-17, 6-10) on Saturday. The doubleheader is slated to start at 12:00 p.m.
 
Last Meeting: Coast Guard swept the Pioneers 12-2 (5 inn.) and 4-2 on March 24, 2013 in a doubleheader that was moved to New London.
 
The Series: The Bears own a 23-11 advantage and have won the last 11 as the teams split back on April 19, 2008. The last Pioneer sweep was on April 23, 2005.
 
Fast Facts: Coast Guard took two from Emerson on Friday, including a 5-4 decision in 10-innings…the Bears are now on a three-game winning streak courtesy of a split against Springfield…Jessie Richardson leads the NEWMAC with a .511 batting average and is in a three-way tie atop the RBI leaderboard with 30 on the year…Cherokee Strickland is fifth in RBI (27)…the Pioneers, who currently occupy the final playoff spot, are two games behind fifth-place Babson, a game ahead of Coast Guard and two games in front of MIT, who still have two to play after Saturday…Gina Martucci (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Township) eclipsed 100 strikeouts on Friday and continues to lead the league in ERA (1.18) and wins (13)…Edie Richardson (Franklin, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) batted .500 (3-for-6) with a double and three RBI on Friday night…Caroline Kushner (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) is third in the conference with 10 stolen bases.
 
Next Up:
Smith is scheduled to host Amherst on Monday for a single game at 4:30 p.m. and the Bears head to Eastern Connecticut State University for a pair on Wednesday beginning at 5:00 p.m.
