The 1982-83 Smith College swimming and diving team finished sixth overall at the Division III National Championship held in Canton, Ohio. Smith had a dual meet record of 7-3 with a first place finish at the Seven Sisters meet and a fifth place finish at the New England Regional. Overall, Smith finished with three National Champions and nine All-Americans in individual events and relays. In swimming, Monique Fischer won the 200 backstroke, and in diving, Barbara King Briggs won the 1-meter and 3-meter to become Smith’s first ever national champion. As the NCAA Division III champion who had also hit the Division I qualifying scores, Briggs was allowed to compete at the Division I championships at the University of Nebraska.
