Shanti Freitas ’08 is a three-time All-American diver finishing second on the 1-Meter Springboard at the 2005 NCAA Division III National Championship and second on the 3-Meter Springboard at nationals in 2008. She holds four out of the six Smith diving records, which includes three in 1-Meter Diving and one in the 3-Meter. Freitas’ accomplishments in the pool earned her school recognition as she was named Smith Rookie of the Year (2005), Sophomore Athlete of the Year (2006) and Senior Athlete of the Year (2008). The NEWMAC also honored her as a two-time All-Conference Second Team member (2005, 2008) and once as an All-Conference First Team member (2006). Her abilities went beyond the pool as she was a finalist for the 2008 NCAA Woman of the Year Award, which recognizes talented female student athletes who have shown leadership in sports, academics and community service. She graduated with a B.A. in Sociology from Smith and a Masters degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in International Education Policy. Freitas now resides in the Greater Minneapolis - St. Paul Area where she works as an Assistant Director for the Center for Study Away at Macalester College.
