Mary Mason's heart has always been with golf. Even though she was named to the Class of 1930 field hockey, basketball, and hockey teams, Mason served as an ambassador for golf at Smith and beyond. She promoted women’s golf by both competing in the sport and also serving on several committees that helped to administer women’s golf in the United States. Beginning in the mid-1950s Mason competed in and won at least four different Club Championships: Essex County Country Club (NJ), Taconic Golf Club (MA) Hyannisport Country Club (MA), and Allied Golf Association. She also played in the 1965 US Women’s Amateur. Mason then joined the United States Golf Association (USGA) Women’s Committee from 1963-1975 where she helped conduct all of the women’s championships, including the US Open, US Amateur and the Curtis Cup. Mason also became president of the US Senior Women’s Golf Association. After her death in 1995, Mason’s impact on the sport is still felt today as her design of the forward tee is used in women’s golf.
